From Rescue to Rally: How Competing with My Rescue Dog Changed Everything

Competing with my Rescue dog training has turned into one of the most exciting times in my life. Whether it's agility courses, rally trials, or basic obedience, I never imagined how much fun it would be to challenge Bella and myself!
I adopted Bella from a family that didn’t take great care of her, and when I first brought her home, I thought, “Geez, I have a Chihuahua mix who’s untrainable.” At three years old, she didn’t know any basic commands, and I’d heard so many misconceptions about dogs like her being “loud, barky,” and “untrainable.” I was just as naive, believing the same things. With little experience in dog training, I relied on what I’d seen on TV, read, and heard in everyday life.
But things quickly changed when Bella was diagnosed with mammary gland cancer and needed emergency surgery to remove five tumors. After surgery, she came back a different dog—full of energy and eager to play. I realized she was incredibly agile and loved jumping and climbing on everything. It was like she had a natural drive to train, and that’s when we started working on the basics.
In December 2023, we decided to join an agility class at SPCALA, and Bella absolutely thrived. She loved running around, quickly picking up the rules and techniques. It was such a great bonding experience, and we worked together as a team! Bella really took to agility, and we went on to take a few six-week classes with Robert, which were fantastic. During one of those classes, we met Kelly and her dog Gia, who introduced us to a sport called Rally. After doing some research, I was hooked, and we signed up for classes with Vita, a talented trainer.
Vita has been a game-changer for us. As an AKC judge, she knows the ins and outs of the sport, and she’s been an amazing mentor for both Bella and me. I’m so grateful for her guidance, and I’m lucky to call her a good friend. We continue to train together, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.
Our journey didn’t stop there. A friend from a basic obedience class invited us to a “FastCAT” event, a sport where dogs race 100 yards, earning points based on their speed. I did a ton of research before the trial, and even met up with my best friend to practice. On the day of the event, I was nervous but excited, especially when I stood at the track, ready to catch Bella.I quickly became addicted to the thrill of competing and working towards earning titles!
As of today, Bella holds her Rally Intermediate title, Beginner Novice Obedience title, and BCAT title, along with nine other AKC titles in fitness, temperament, obedience, and tricks! I couldn’t be prouder of the team we’ve become. Watching Bella grow in confidence and training has been incredibly inspiring, and I wouldn’t want to do this with any other dog but her.
