Dog Obedience Training in Long Beach, CA
Obedience training teaches your dog to reliably respond to a handful of core commands in real, everyday conditions, not just in a quiet room. At BAMK9, that's the Core 4: Place, Heel, Come, and Down, and it's the foundation built into every program we run, whether you train alongside us or hand the daily reps to us.

What "obedience" actually means here
A lot of obedience training stops at "my dog knows sit in the kitchen." We build for reliability under real distraction: other dogs, traffic, crowds, food on the ground. Each of the Core 4 is trained through a clear progression and has to hit a 4-out-of-5 clean reliability standard before we move your dog to the next level. That standard is what separates a dog who "knows" a command from a dog who actually does it, every time, everywhere.

The Core 4
Most obedience programs teach a long list of tricks and commands, and most of them never get used once the class ends. We do the opposite. We teach four: Place, Heel, Come, and Down. That's it. Every one of those four solves a real problem you deal with daily, a dog who won't settle, a dog who drags you down the street, a dog who won't come back, a dog who won't calm down on cue. A dog who's rock solid on four commands that matter is more useful, every single day, than a dog who half-knows a revolving list of party tricks.
Where obedience training happens
Whichever path you choose, the work happens out in Long Beach, not in a sterile room. Private sessions start at Marina Vista Park for your first three weeks. Board and train happens across real Long Beach parks, trails, and coffee shops. Either way, your dog's obedience gets proofed in the same kind of places you'll actually use it.
Common questions
-
Is obedience training its own program?
-
No. Obedience, the Core 4, is built into both Private Training and Board and Train as the foundation for all dogs.
-
-
What commands do you actually teach?
-
The Core 4: Place, Heel, Come, and Down. You'll notice "stay" isn't on the list. We teach something called an implied stay for our Down. So you teach one command rather than two separate.
-
-
How do you know when my dog has actually learned a command?
-
We use a 4-out-of-5 clean reliability standard before advancing to the next level. We focus on building solid foundations, not progressing for the sake of it.
-
-
Should I choose private training or board and train for obedience?
-
Choose private if you want to be hands-on and learn the process with your dog. Choose board and train if you're short on time and want a trainer handling the daily reps, with a transfer session to catch you up at the end.
